Well we made it to California and I proceeded to quickly shuffle the boys off to family across the state. I met my Mom in Manteca and handed off Mason and Elliot and then drove South to Santa Cruz where I left Loren with Auntie, I then turned around and drove North to Napa to meet up with Keith and see Steadfast for the first time since August. For anyone counting that was Elko to Manteca to Santa Cruz to Napa, a total of 13 hours of driving..wooo hoo. I was wondering why Keith wasn't sending me many pictures of the boat...well it's because it was a total and complete BOMB!!! The good news is that Keith had prepared me. We had joked that although he had been working for months it was likely I wouldn't see a single thing different when I got there. He was mostly correct - though being a boat gal I was able to look under the skin and notice things (like new brass thru hulls) when I drove up to the boat. Keith then gave me the royal walk through showing off all the projects he had completed and frankly it really is amazing what he has done single handedly. I'm totally impressed by the knowledge and skill needed to handle such a wide variety of big projects like adding the new diesel filter system, glassing in new support boards for the batteries, rewiring the boat and replacing thru hulls. Seriously , I couldn't do even one of those tasks on my own! We are probably a week or so behind schedule but Keith and I have been busting a move on getting the priority tasks done so we can drop her in the water. Keith doing the work of course - me doing all the busting. hahahaa Meanwhile, this is the first time that we have been kid free for more than a few hours since...well...we really can't remember when. We think my Mom took all three of them for an over nighter once upon a time. It's been fun just hang'n out the two of us. I kind of feel like we are kids again back working on our first boat the Columbia 28. O course running down to the chandlery for a part we need is much easier now then it was then when buying a boat part generally meant we had to eat Top Raman for the remainder of the week to pay for it.

This has to be the strangest migration to California yet. We made it out of our house and just down the street to our local Best Western. We can't leave town quite yet because Mason has his competitive soccer tryouts but yet we rented our house from June 1 forward...so here we sit at the hotel waiting for Mason's second session of tryouts this afternoon. We'll have a good nights sleep here tonight after some more pool and hot tub time then hit the road first thing tomorrow morning. Whenever I talk to people about our lifestyle the biggest hang up they have is the travel between Colorado and California. I hear "You drive?!?"...like it's from here to Africa rather then just the West Coast. I guess my kids have done it so many times that they don't even think twice about...it's all just part of the adventure. I'm pretty grateful that my kids are good at all the new experiences and are flexible - I'm hoping that this will turn out to be a life skill that they will always have. |
